The FDA Now Requires a Label on Steroids Warning About the Hazards of Epidural Injections

Posted 4/25/2014

"The effectiveness and safety of epidural administration of corticosteroids have not been established, and FDA has not approved corticosteroids for this use. "

"FDA is warning that injection of corticosteroids into the epidural space of the spine may result in rare but serious adverse events, including loss of vision, stroke, paralysis, and death."

These quotes are found in an FDA document that was released on April 24, 2014:

http://www.fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch/SafetyInformation/SafetyAlertsforHumanMedicalProducts/ucm394530.htm

This document clearly states that epidural steroid injections are not FDA approved and acknowledges the serious risks of using this procedure.  It also states that the effectiveness of epidural steroid injections has not been established.
